Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

The year is 1939 and the World War II is about to break into action. Indiana Jones starts off by searching through Barnett College museum to find a statue that a Mr. Smith wants. After finding and showing the statue to Mr. Smith, Mr. Smith pulls a gun on Indy and his friend Marcus Brody and takes the statue. Indy tries to stop him but Mr. Smith manage to escape through a window but he loses his jacket.

Searching through his jacket Indy and Marcus find a passport. The passport reveals that Mr. Smith is actually Klaus Kerner, a secret agent of the Third Nazi Reich! They also find a magazine article with Indy and a woman called Sophia Hapgood. The picture is from a dig in Iceland 10 years ago. Indy quickly realise that Sophia may be in trouble and travels to New York to talk to her.[break] Sophia lost her interest in archaeology and is now a psychic. The two of them find that Klaus had already been to Sophia’s room and have ransacked it. All her artifacts are stolen except a necklace, which she always wears. She tells Indy that Kerner is trying to discover the secret of orichalcum, a mineral that was used in Atlantis. The key to finding Atlantis is a lost dialogue of Plato, called the The Hermocrates. Here the adventure begins, Indy and Sophia head out to stop the Nazis from finding the Atlantis and the orichalcum mineral!

When LucasArts released Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis they used the tried-and-true engin SCUMM with the same control navigation as other similar adventure game like Monkey Island. The commands include give, pick up, use, open, talk to, push, close, look at and pull. To the right of the interface you will find the classic inventory box with icons of items. Interacting and talking to people always have multiple path and serveral different choices to choose from and depending on your choices the game changes. They also included three different ways you can complete the game:

1. Team mode with Sophia
2. Fists mode where you fight
3. Wits mode where you use your brain

You choose your mode in the beginning of the game and each mode is completely different. A very nice feature that gives you three games in the package of one!

In the beginning puzzles tend to be rather easy, some are really clever but not exceptionally difficult. Later in the game things get harder. The puzzles are more ingenious and contains more work to complete them. The puzzles are highly entertaining and one of the best I have come across! All puzzles includes complex logic and thinking skills.

Even though Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis was released in 1992 the graphics looks really good. It has that classic pixel style games get when using the colourful VGA graphics. So far everything has been good with Fate of Atlantis. The game play, the puzzles, the story, the graphics, what about the sounds? The sound is fantastic! The music includes the epic theme written by John Williams which fits perfect to the scenes! Strange for a ten-year-old game, but the sound in The Fate of Atlantis is some of the best I've heard in any computer game, ever. The music, including John Williams' epic theme. The CD-ROM remake also includes voice-overs instead of subtitles which is a great feature.

LucasArts did plan a sequel to this popular game with the game title Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix but it was discontinued in 1995. Even though LucasArt didn’t develop any sequals there are a few fan-games created called Indiana Jones and the Fountain of Youth and Indiana Jones and the Crown of Solomon.

Overall Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is a classic adventure game and if you haven’t played it you are missing out on a piece of adventure gaming history. With perfect sound and music which sets the mood you are able to choose what type of game mode you want to play and follow a plot better then the movies! Fate of Atlantis has all the classic characteristics a great plot, good puzzles, superb game play and good characters. Have you ever wanted to be Indiana Jones when you see the movies? Well, here you have your chance! Beat up all the Nazis you want and travel to places like Iceland, Monte Carlo, Crete, Algiers and of course Atlantis. Go play this!
