The Settlers: Life is Feudal

A strategy game which blends simulation and RTS, while at the same time doing it very original. Settlers was the first game ever of its kind, and it still is hard to find titles like it. While the more recent Settlers game failed at staying true to itself, the first 3 games are great and innovative. Settler’s lets you play as a king, seeking fortune in a distant land never before explored.

The game plays from a starting point (the castle), with a set amount of resources and manpower. From there on you build roads like a web, which again you build connecting buildings to. Your settlers are bound to these roads, which seems a little awkward at first considering most RTS standards. However, it works. Instead of moving and exploring with armies, you do it with borders. Because the bigger your kingdom is the more territory you get. Eventually you meet rivals, and at first these are easy to overcome. But as you progress they become more and further away, and you have to put some decent amount of strategy into building your kingdom. At the same time you have to manage 20+ resources from beer to mining/smelting to foodstuffs.

The graphics are great, and the feature making height a factor adds to the depth of the game. Colors are also nice, and the environments really feel alive, which the sound score really adds to. The style of the game is original and memorable, in which the series will base itself on for years to come!
