We've all played a game that we keep coming back to time and time again.. what makes a game truly memorable.. why are some considered classics and others complete duds? (without stating the obvious!) =)

To be a classic it has to be fun. To obvious?

hmm the deciding factors would have to be;

- replayability

- the comedic touch (lucasarts im looking in your direction!)

- rewards, that soft feeling almost smug-like when you complete a game. knowing you did it by yourself!

- characters that you can empathise with. well this works only for a few games sure, il be the first to admit that.

cant think of anything else at the mo!

Linear enough that a story is discernible but not too linear that you feel trapped and playing more than once becomes just an endless repetition on set commands.

it always made me curious as to why a game is either successful or not.. aside from marketing... classic example is loom.. one of my favourite games but mostly ignored by the general public

Depends on the game... I'll give some examples

God Of War/ Soul Calibur- It's enjoyable carnage, but what makes it worth playing again? The unlockables. So... Unlockables are #1 reason.

Final Fantasy 7- Immersive storyline that just.... wow... grabs you and pulls you under over and over again. Storyline #2

Final Fantasy Tactics- Sheer customization options... You can play with a completely different play-style each new game and it feels fresh each time. Customization #3 reason for replayability.

Quake (All) Some things just never get old, and the ability to Frag your friends is one. Playing with friends or interesting strangers #4.

Metal Gear Solid/ Fable (the new one, not the old one)- So many different ways to do things, meaning replayability in different syles is possible.... Non- Linear gameplay or Story would be reason #5

metal gear solid.. i still havnt played a bad one.. cant wait for number 6.. eh.. and a ps3 =) i must admit, final fantasy vii is the only game of the series i really became immersed in.. the others really didnt do it for me.. especially X.. it was far too linear.

Should have had a poll for this thread..

I never found the FF series to be that enjoyable. i mean i loved FF3 for SNES but the new one i tried on DS just sucked in my opinion

not even the seventh installment? the one that EVERYONE will not shut up about for years and years to come? Kinda like the gaming equivalent to Dimebag Darrel (as a sidenote i really wish the metal community would stop going on about RIP Dimebag....he's dead, he rocked. thats it. let him be).

talking about FF VII again, it totally sucked you in (or was that the short skirt on Tifa....i always wondered!), immersed you in this fantastical gameplay tutorials were integrated in to the story (ok not the first time that has happened but a nice touch nonetheless). I think I did cry when Aeris/Aerith died......i was like "noooooooooooooooooo, she was only on level 42 and didnt even get a chance to learn her level 4 limit breeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaak........remainder of this sentence is drowned out by inaudible sobbing...."
